Woodley Pool Opening Updates and Clarifications

Dear Shareholders and Members.

As expected, we have received a number of questions about our opening processes and policies. Please see further information below.

I'm New, Where Are My Cards?

If you are new to Woodley Pool, welcome!  If you have already purchased your membership, your membership cards will be at the front desk (each family member gets a card). The lifeguards at the desk will ask to take a picture of each member of your family.  You only have to do this once.

If you have any issues, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Mask Policy

To clarify the Pool's mask wearing policy, we will adhere strictly to what the State mandates and suggests, which is to say, there is no requirement or mandate to wear a mask. The State recommends that unvaccinated people who cannot maintain social distancing wear a mask, but it’s not required.  We strongly suggest that unvaccinated individuals wear masks when entering and exiting the property, in the bathhouses and shed, and when they cannot maintain proper social distancing.

Further, just like last year, if you feel ill, please stay home.

Raft and Squirt Gun Nights

We have been asked a number of questions about Raft and Squirt Gun Nights.

Please be advised that raft and squirt gun nights remain discontinued until further notice. We will reconsider later in the season.

Sunday Hot Dogs and Sundaes Return!

We are thrilled to announce the return of Sunday Hot Dogs and Sundaes!  Remember that proceeds support the Woodley Warrior Swim and Dive Teams.

On most Sunday nights (weather permitting), Swim and Dive volunteers will serve:
Hot dogs from 4:30 - 6:30 pm
Sundaes from 6:30 - 7:30 pm

(An assortment of drinks, chips, and deserts will also be available with the hot dogs.)

Updated Operating Procedures

As you may have seen, the CDC has released new guidance on the wearing of masks by those who are vaccinated, and the Governor of Virginia has released new guidance that will become effective on Friday, May 28th. Below is an updated description of COVID-related operating procedures for the pool this summer. At this time, we do not expect any further updates from the State or County. In general, as we did last year, we will adhere strictly to CDC guidance, and State and County guidance.

• There will be no capacity restrictions on the pool, other than the ordinary capacity limitation imposed by the County as part of our operating permit.
• There will be no requirement to reserve space or slots.
• Regarding the wearing of masks, per the Governor's order and CDC guidance, masks are no longer necessary for members who have been vaccinated. Nevertheless, we strongly encourage continued use of masks when entering and exiting the grounds, in the bathhouses, and in the shed, as well as any time that proper social distance cannot be maintained. Please be courteous to your neighbor.
• There will no longer be health screening procedures at the front desk.
• All of the Pool's furniture will be placed out on the grounds for use by the membership. We will not continue the use of the green/red card indicators we used last year. There will be cleaning wipes available for those who wish to wipe down their tables and chairs prior to use. Also, as a reminder, you are always welcome to bring your own chairs for use on the lawn.
• Members will be able to use guest passes.
• The grills will be available for use by members, as will the member-designated fridge in the shed.
• The Pavilion will be available for rental under the normal rates and processes, beginning on Tuesday, June 1st. More information will be posted on the website about Pavilion rentals.
• The pool will keep two lanes for lap swimmers Monday through Friday from 11 am to 12 pm, and for the last hour the pool is open. There will be one lane for lap swimmers at all other times. Lanes cannot be reserved in advance.

Shareholder Memberships

As a reminder, our bylaws stipulate that Shareholders are obligated to purchase a membership each or, in lieu of purchasing a membership, they may pay an inactive fee to maintain their share in good standing. In turn, shareholders are guaranteed a membership each season at Woodley. Because of this, the Board must manage memberships to account for undecided Shareholders who may yet decide to purchase a membership. In order to accurately monitor our membership numbers for 2021, we ask that Shareholders decide as soon as possible whether they will purchase a season membership or pay the inactive fee, but in any case, by no later than July 1st. In order to cast your vote at the annual Shareholder meeting in August, your account must be in good standing.

Membership numbers are strong so far this year, and Shareholders who decide late to pay an inactive fee may deprive the Pool from accepting a new member because the slot had to be left open. Please help us manage our membership by making this decision as soon as possible.

 Registration Information

Thanks to all those who are already registered for the 2021 season. While we are still accepting non-shareholder and new memberships, we are closely monitoring our membership numbers this year. Register today to ensure your spot at Woodley is secure!

Log in to access the Membership Management System and register for the season. Use your login and password from last year. A recovery link is on the login page for forgotten passwords. DO NOT create a new account.

Swim Lessons

We are coordinating with Atlantic Pools, our pool management company for our lifeguards to offer individual (1-1) swim lessons for our youngest Woodley members. Swim lesson opportunities will be offered during select hours during the day and evening. Arrangements will be made directly with the lifeguard and member once the pool is open. Information will be posted on our bulletin board by the front desk.

Opportunities will be available for swim lessons while the pool is open, except that no swim lessons may occur after 3 pm on weekends (including Fridays) or holidays.

Lap Swimming & Adult Swim

Our lap lane(s) will be available for members of all ages to utilize for lap swimming. Swimmers in the lap lane must be swimming laps independently.

• Weekdays (Monday - Friday) we will have 2 lap lanes available from 11am - 12pm and during the last hour of the day.
• Weekends and holidays we will have 1 one lap lane available all day.

As we have done in previous years, the last 15 minutes of each hour will be a "break" for the all children under 15 to exit the pool and offer adult swim in the pool, lap lanes, and diving area.

Woodley Amenities

• Vending Machines, Ice Machine, Grills and a Refrigerator/Freezer will be available.
• Popsicles and Ice Cream will be sold at the front desk.
• Ping Pong and Foosball will be available and paddles and balls will be at the front desk.
• Hand sanitizer stations available on the premises.
• NEW Surface disinfecting wipes available for member use.

We are adding options to household online accounts to purchase guest passes and add funds to your account for purchases. This will allow you purchase guest passes in advance of visiting the pool to expedite your check in process and add funds to your account for your child (and yourself!) to use to purchase popsicles and ice cream at the front desk in order keep cash transactions to a minimum.

2021 Covid Precautions & Restrictions
What to Expect this Summer

Woodley plans to open on time Memorial Day Weekend, and while we anticipate and hope for a more "normal" summer, we will, as always, comply with all State and County directives with respect to Covid-19 protocols.  We will continue to monitor directives applicable to the pool, and will communicate with members as conditions change.  Please understand that these conditions continue to evolve, and we may adjust accordingly at any point.

Please see below for a list of restrictions and conditions we currently anticipate operating under, largely based on the Phase 3 guidance that was applicable at the end of last season, and still applicable today.
  • We will require members/guests to wear masks upon entry, exit, and when in the bathhouse.
  • Staff will wear masks while at the desk.
  • Masks are not required (nor recommended) when swimming. In other outdoor areas, some may choose to wear masks if they are more comfortable or unable to maintain appropriate social distancing.
  • We have notifications/signs about recommended social distancing, but that is up to each household to enforce accordingly in consideration of your social circles.
  • We will provide options for members to clean/disinfect their own areas if desired.
  • Members will undergo health screening at the front desk upon entry (in the form of questions as per last year).
  • We will remind members to stay home if sick or exposed, in our regular communications and signage.
  • Currently, the State limits pool to 75% of their normal capacity; accordingly, we will monitor our overall numbers during our busy days.  We will adjust this number as directives allow.
  • While we plan to allow guests this summer, we do reserve the right to limit guests, especially on our busiest days, to ensure that our members have the opportunity to access the facility.
  • We are tentatively planning to have a number of social events, observing social distancing guidelines.  More info will follow.
  • We plan to open the grills to use by members.
  • We plan to put out all of the pool's furniture for use by members.

Dear Woodley Members,

We are excited to continue our planning for Summer 2021, and we hope this email finds you well. The WRA Board is making preparations for Summer 2021, including updating our membership structure to offer memberships that are based on household size. While the structure is changing, several of the discounts, including early bird and senior discounts are still available. The pandemic has been challenging for everyone, including Woodley, however the Board has worked diligently to contain costs. The Board’s goal is to keep our membership rates at a reasonable level and still keep pace with rising costs of operating a community pool. Our new membership structure and prices are listed below for returning members to review in advance. Memberships will be available for purchase on our website, www.woodleypool.org, on February 1st for returning and new members. If you need assistance logging into your account, or if you have any other questions, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Membership Notes:

  • Early bird discounts will still be available through April 30th; $50 off for Shareholders and $25 off for non-shareholders. The prices listed are base prices, without these discounts.
  • Senior memberships (both shareholder and non-shareholder) reflect a 15% discount.
  • Senior memberships are still available for households with at least one member over 65 by June 1st.
  • Membership options are available for households with up to 8 members. If you have a larger household, please contact our Membership Chair PRIOR to purchasing a membership by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • ALL household members, including children of all ages and caregivers, count towards your membership number.
  • The Membership you choose is valid for the entire season, so please choose accordingly.
  • Share (aka Bond) price remains at $350.

Shareholder Information

  • Shareholders must choose a membership or pay the Inactive Fee by no later than July 1st, in order to remain in good standing and cast a vote at the annual shareholder meeting.

If your account is not active due to an outstanding Inactive Fee from 2020, you will need to contact This email address is being protected from spambots. • Shareholder prices reflect a 15% discount from non-shareholder rates.

WOODLEY POOL PHASE 3 UPDATE

Phase 3 Observations and Updates

DEAR SHAREHOLDERS AND MEMBERS:

A quick update today to provide a few observations and reminders, and to announce some changes based on feedback we have received from members as we continue to adjust under Virginia's Phase 3 reopening process.

First, we want to thank everyone for what has largely been a smooth opening under Phase 3.  We want to reiterate again how important it is that everyone take all health precautions seriously for the well-being of our membership and community, including wearing a mask upon entering and exiting the grounds, in the bathhouses, and when you cannot maintain proper social distance while on the grounds. You've surely noticed the health screening that the guards perform upon entry, in the form of questions about symptoms and travel.  These are mandated by the State, and they are meant to make members more self aware about their own health and how it can impact others.  Ideally, members should ask themselves these questions before they come to the pool.  If you are sick or don't feel well, please stay home.

Second, please remember that as part of our effort to minimize health risks at the pool, we are not allowing toys and balls in either the main or baby pool.  These are items that typically get shared and handled by many people, especially kids, and can be an avenue for transmission.  Additionally, please remember that use of the baby pool is by reservation only for families in order to ensure that those using the baby pool can remain socially distanced.  Please refrain from using the baby pool outside of this system.

Adherence to these and all the pool rules are enforced by the guards, but really, everything works best if members take responsibility to police themselves and do what they can to ensure a welcoming environment for everyone.  The guards' primary job is to ensure the safety of swimmers, and the less they have to monitor these and other issues, the better.  We are all in this together, so please be mindful of others, and please help us maintain a safe and inviting environment for all.

Third, based on feedback and questions from the membership and our management company, please note the following:

  • Effective Monday, July 20th, all swims lanes may be reserved through the online registration system previously used to reserve lanes.  This includes the six lanes that are up during the first hour the pool is open each day (reserved for swimmers 18+) and the two swim lanes that are up the rest of the day.  Three spots per lane will be available.  Please note, we reduced the swim lanes that are up after the first hour to two to  reflect actual usage and to improve the ability of members to remain socially distanced in the free swim area of the pool.  As before, the guards can assist you with scheduling at the front desk.
  • We will be placing laminated cards or other indicators on the tables so that members can indicate when they leave that they have been at that table.  This will alert the guards more quickly when tables have been used and need to be cleaned, as well as members entering the grounds.  Please be sure to flip the card accordingly when you leave the pool.
  • During regular hours, after the first hour reserved for 18+, the dive well will remain dedicated to diving board use only.  This is to encourage social distancing in that area.
  • The Board has decided that for this summer no private swim lessons will be allowed in the pool.  This decision was made to reduce unnecessary contact in the pool between individuals who should otherwise be socially distanced.  We appreciate your understanding.  This does not apply to a parent or older sibling instructing a child from the same family unit.
  • Members must scan their cards to gain access to the grounds.  New members, or members who have requested replacement cards, will have cards made for them which will be available at the front desk for pickup usually within a week.

Lastly, in order to ensure that the pool can accommodate the Shareholders and members it already has while maintaining and encouraging social distancing, the Board has decided to cut off new memberships for non-shareholders.  Shareholders who have not yet purchased a share may still do so, or they may pay the inactive fee.  If you are a Shareholder, we remind you that you must either buy a summer membership or pay the inactive fee to maintain your share in good standing.

Thank you again for your support of Woodley Pool.

July 4th Hours and Other Updates

DEAR SHAREHOLDERS AND MEMBERS:

This is to remind everyone that pool hours tomorrow, July 4th, are from 11-6 pm, as is posted on the website. Also, since we are still in Phase 2 tomorrow, the first two hours the pool is open (11-1) is reserved for 18+ only, and the pool may be used only for lap swimming and diving by reservation.

Under Phase 3 beginning Monday, the normal Summer schedule will continue to be in effect.  The pool will be open from 11-9 daily, with the exception of Sundays, when the pool is open from 12-9.  This will continue until Fairfax County schools go back into session.

Also, there have been some questions about our transition into Phase 3.  Please see below for some answers and additional information.

  • During Phase 3, the first hour the pool is open (not first 2 hours as in Phase 2) will be reserved for lap swimmers 18 and over.  However, the baby pool will be open by reservation, and members/families with kids below the age of 18 are allowed on pool grounds during this first hour.  The pool will open for free swim after the first hour, and the number of lap lanes will be reduced to three.
  • At this time, we will not be using a reservation system for lap swimming. We will reevaluate this and the number of lap lanes required as we observe how Phase 3 goes.  While we do not anticipate full lap lanes, if you are concerned about the number of swimmers, you can always call ahead to the front desk to find out how full they are.
  • The pool will revert to our usual practice, as described in our pool rules, of swimming breaks for swimmers 14 and under for 15 minutes before the hour to the hour (except during the first hour the pool is open that is limited to adult lap swimming).
  • As previously announced, there will be no guest passes allowed this summer.  This was a decision made in the interest of the safety and well being of all our members and life guards.  Any guest passes that were purchased as part of your membership will be rolled over to next season.
  • As we said in the last email, we will be putting out a limited number of chairs and lounge chairs for use by members.  We will not be putting out our full stock of chairs at this time, as all of this requires additional cleaning by the life guards.  We continue to encourage you to bring your own chairs if you desire.  Again, we will reevaluate this as we observe how Phase 3 goes.
  • In order to keep the pool deck clear to allow for social distancing in and around the pool, we will not be placing chairs on the deck.  Please relax after your swim in the grassy areas.
  • Lastly, we want to reiterate the importance of social distancing and the wearing of face masks as we transition.  Face masks are required upon entering and exiting the facility, and when proper social distance cannot be maintained on the grounds.  We are excited to be able to offer wider and more open access to the pool and grounds under Phase 3, but it's very important that everyone consider their safety and the safety of others and our community as we go through this together.

Thank you again for your support of Woodley Pool.

Phase 3 Transition

DEAR SHAREHOLDERS AND MEMBERS:

We are pleased to announce that Woodley Pool will be transitioning to Phase 3 operations under the State's Forward Virginia guidelines, beginning Monday, July 6th.  That means the Pool will continue to operate under Phase 2 guidance through Sunday, July 5th.  If you would like to read the Forward Virginia Phase 3 guidelines, you can find them here.  Meanwhile, please see below for details about pool operations and safety requirements under Phase 3.

Woodley pool operations under Phase 3:

  • Free swim will be allowed.  That means we are not limited to lap swimming only.  You will no longer have to reserve slots through the registration system for use of the main pool.
  • The pool's capacity will be limited to 75 percent of our capacity limit, so, no more than 171 members on the grounds at once.
  • Diving will be allowed, but please note that because of social distancing rules, there will be a limit to the number of members that may be using the boards at any one time.  We will place social distancing reminders on the deck by the diving boards.
  • Social distancing is still required, and will be key to ensuring that the Pool and grounds remain a safe place for all to enjoy.  For aquatic facilities, members must maintain 10 feet of distance between themselves and others outside their families.
  • The baby pool will be open. To ensure social distancing, we will require reservations through our online registration system accessible through our website.  It will allow four "family" slots for the baby pool enclosure.  Each family reservation must include 1 parent/adult supervisor 18 years or older and may include up to 2 children who are 5 years and younger.  Direct adult supervision is required at all times in the baby pool.  The baby pool reservations will be for 30 minute blocks of time.
  • Chairs will be placed on the grounds, but not on the pool deck.
  • The playground, grills, and shed will remain closed to members until further notice.
  • The pool will continue to be open to members 18 and older for the first hour the pool is open each day.  Until further notice, all six swim lanes will remain up during that first hour.  After the first hour, three lanes will remain to accommodate lap swimmers.
  • No toys (including squirt guns), balls, noodles, or rafts are allowed in the pool at any time.  This does not apply to personal flotation devices needed for swimming.  For example, Coast Guard approved life vests and swimming aids for children are OK.
  • Members 12 and under must continue to be accompanied by an adult to ensure adherence to social distancing guidelines.

Additional Safety Considerations:

  • Safety remains our number one priority, for our membership and for the lifeguards working at Woodley.
  • Per Virginia Health Department guidelines, every member MUST continue to be checked prior to entry into the pool.  Please confirm to the lifeguards that you do not have any of the COVID symptoms posted prominently at the front desk.  If you are sick, please stay home.
  • Members must wear face masks entering and exiting the facility.  This is required by the State and County.  Your face mask protects the life guards, and their face mask protects you.
  • Further, Virginia Executive Order 63 is still in effect, mandating use of face masks indoors.  For us, that means members using the bathhouses must wear face masks.
  • While the lifeguards will be observing increased cleaning protocols, we encourage members to wipe down tables and chairs prior to use.  We are working on acquiring wipes for this purpose.
  • Social distancing must be maintained, and for aquatic facilities such as ours, the standard is 10 feet between family groups.  We have spaced tables accordingly.  While in the pool, please observe these guidelines.

Finally, as we've said before, we will continually evaluate these rules, and will adjust when needed, and when allowed by the State and Fairfax County.  This is a team effort, we are all in this together, and the execution of Phase 2 has been (relatively) smooth. Phase 3 is a major step forward in terms of access to and use of the pool and grounds.  We ask that everyone adhere to these guidelines, respect others' space, and if you are a parent of a child, please remember you are responsible for their conduct and their maintaining social distance (as well as your own).  Safety first means adhering to the rules, especially those that direct you to stay home if you feel sick.

Thank you again for your support of Woodley Pool.

Refund Deadline Reminder
DEAR SHAREHOLDERS AND MEMBERS:

We want to thank everyone who has purchased a membership this year. We understand that many of you purchased memberships as a way to support the pool in a year where the pool will take a financial loss, and we greatly appreciate that. As we said back in April, Woodley has one of the most generous refund policies of any pool in our area, and we encouraged everyone to buy in light of that policy. As we move through the Summer, we continue to take steps to reopen under Virginia's reopening guidelines, and provide greater value for your membership.

In the spirit of transparency, we want to remind you that Woodley's refund policy requires that members requesting refunds must do so by the 11th day of the swim season for those who purchased prior to opening day. For those who purchased a membership after the pool opened, they may request a refund by the 11th day of their membership.

The pool opened on June 15th; therefore, for those who purchased prior to opening day, refund requests must be received before midnight tonight, no exceptions. For shareholders, you may request to pay the inactive fee in lieu of maintaining your membership for this season. For those considering requesting a refund, we hope that you will consider keeping your membership as a way to support the pool and our community during these difficult times.

Thank you again for your support of Woodley Pool.
